Chapter 11

I woke to a door closing, but it hadn’t been mine. I could hear Chase walking around in his room. I untangled myself from the sheets and got up. I shoved my feet into the boots I had left scattered by the bed, and I slipped out of my room and knocked lightly on his door. He opened it with a gruff look on his face, which instantly brightened when he saw me.

“Hi, you’re up,” he said, opening the door wider for me to come in.

“Just now. I heard your door.”

He winced.“Sorry about that. I didn’t mean to wake you.”

I waved a hand at him.“It’s fine. I had to be ready to wake up.” I dropped down into his chair. “How did the rest of your day go?” I asked, cringing. I might as well have asked about the weather.

“It was fine—just reports. It’s almost dinner. I’m assuming you’re hungry?” he asked, and I nodded, smiling.

“I have to remember to take the baskets back to Amelia. Before I know it, they are going to be overrunning my room.”

“Do you know anything about Damien’s broken nose?” he asked.

I looked up at him innocently.“Me? No, why would you ask?”

He sighed and flopped down on his bed.“Because he was ranting at the infirmary about how you are a crazy, unhinged beast, and we should be rid of you immediately,” he said, rolling his head to look at me again. “So, what happened?”

“He tried to take something that wasn’t his, so I taught him a lesson.”

The rage in Chase’s eyes surprised me. He sat up immediately.

“What did he do to you?” he growled.

“I took care of it, Chase. I don’t need you to protect me.” I could tell he didn’t believe that, as true as it might come to be. He would never feel off the hook for taking care of me.

“Yes, I do. We just pulled you out of a prison. Just because you might be coming into some powers doesn’t mean you know how to protect yourself. I’m here to take care of you. I failed before. I’m not going to again.”

I could see him spiraling into a prison of his own making. How long had he lived there? Living with the guilt of not being able to protect me? I got up and walked over to his bed. I sat down next to him and put my arms around him, setting my head on his shoulder. Slowly, ever so slowly, he wrapped his arms around me. I could feel him take in a big breath, fluttering my hair. He squeezed me tight.

“It’s not your fault, Chase. None of this was ever your fault.”

As he shook, I held him tighter, my heart gradually thawing. Even with our rocky start here, I could now tell—feel—that I could trust him.

“I should have been there. I should have protected you from her,” he said softly. “We all knew how she was. The moment I heard about your father, I should have raced to you.”

I pulled back and looked him in the eye.
